What Windows Server 2025 Standard is

Windows Server 2025 is Microsoft’s current server operating system, released in November 2024. It is what you install on a physical server or a virtual machine to run the things a business network needs: Active Directory and domain controllers, file and print shares, DNS and DHCP, web applications on IIS, SQL Server, line-of-business software, Hyper-V virtual machines, and backup or storage roles.

Standard is the edition most small and medium businesses buy. It is the full server operating system — the difference from Datacenter is virtualisation rights and a handful of enterprise storage and networking features, not day-to-day capability.

What is new in Windows Server 2025

🔄

Hotpatching

Apply most security updates without restarting the server. Available on Standard through Azure Arc, and it needs Secure Boot and virtualisation-based security switched on. Quarterly baseline updates still require a reboot.

🔒

Security hardened by default

SMB now requires signing by default, there is a built-in SMB brute-force limiter, and Credential Guard is enabled on supported hardware. Active Directory moves to 32k database pages, which lifts long-standing object size limits.

🧩

Hyper-V and GPU improvements

GPU partitioning lets several virtual machines share one physical GPU, and live migration now works for GPU-backed workloads. Useful if you are running anything graphics or compute heavy on virtual machines.

💾

Faster storage

ReFS gets block cloning and native deduplication with compression, and NVMe performance is substantially better than Server 2022 on the same hardware.

Windows Server 2025 Standard vs Datacenter

Both editions are the same operating system. These are the differences that decide which one you need.

Capability Standard Datacenter
Virtual machines included 2 per licensed server Unlimited
All standard server roles ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Hotpatching ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Storage Replica One volume, up to 2 TB Unlimited
Storage Spaces Direct ❌ No ✅ Yes
Shielded virtual machines ❌ No ✅ Yes
Software-defined networking ❌ No ✅ Yes

If you are running one or two virtual machines, or installing straight onto the hardware, Standard is the edition you want. Datacenter only pays off once you are running a dense virtualisation host.

⚠ Do I also need CALs?

Usually yes, and they are licensed separately from the server.

A Windows Server licence covers the server operating system itself. Under Microsoft’s Per Core plus CAL model, every user or device that connects to that server also needs a Client Access Licence. A CAL is not software you install — it is a licensing entitlement, and the server will run perfectly well without one, which is exactly why it is so often missed until an audit.

You choose either User CALs (one per person, covering all their devices) or Device CALs (one per machine, covering everyone who uses it). If people connect over Remote Desktop, that needs an RDS CAL on top of the base CAL.

We sell Remote Desktop Services CALs separately: RDS 50-user CAL for Server 2022 and RDS 50-user CAL for Server 2019. Not sure what your setup needs? Ask us before you buy and we will work it out with you.

How Windows Server 2025 core licensing works

Microsoft licenses Windows Server by physical core, not per server or per socket. The rules are fixed and worth knowing before you buy:

🧮

Every physical core counts

You license all the cores in the server, not just the ones you use.

8️⃣

8 cores per processor minimum

Even a 4-core CPU is licensed as 8.

🔢

16 cores per server minimum

The floor for any single server, whatever the hardware.

📥

Standard gives you 2 VMs

Need more? Add another full set of core licences for each additional two.

If you are not certain how many cores your server has, open Task Manager, go to Performance > CPU, and read the Cores figure. Send us the number and we will tell you what you need.

System requirements

Processor 1.4 GHz 64-bit, x64 instruction set, NX and DEP, CMPXCHG16b, SLAT (EPT or NPT)
Architecture 64-bit only. There is no 32-bit version of Windows Server 2025.
Memory 512 MB minimum, 2 GB for the Desktop Experience install. In practice, plan 8 GB or more.
Storage 32 GB minimum. Allow considerably more for roles, updates and page file.
Firmware UEFI 2.3.1c with Secure Boot, plus TPM 2.0 for hotpatching and Credential Guard
Network Gigabit Ethernet adapter, and an internet connection during activation

💾 Download, install and activate

Your email includes the download links and written instructions. Microsoft also publishes a free 180-day evaluation ISO, so you can install and test the server before your key is ever entered.

01

Download the ISO from Microsoft’s Evaluation Center or the link in your email.

02

Write it to a USB drive and install, choosing Standard with or without Desktop Experience.

03

Enter your key under Settings > System > Activation, or run slmgr /ipk followed by slmgr /ato.

04

Confirm with slmgr /xpr. Then add your roles and features.

How long is Windows Server 2025 supported?

Windows Server 2025 reached general availability in November 2024 and follows Microsoft’s fixed ten-year lifecycle: mainstream support to around October 2029, and extended support with security updates to around October 2034.

That matters if you are still on Server 2012 R2, which is already out of support, or Server 2016, which is close to the end of its own extended period. Moving to 2025 buys you roughly a decade of patches rather than a couple of years.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can I run Windows Server 2025 on 32-bit hardware?

No. Windows Server has been 64-bit only since Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2025 is no exception. You need an x64 processor with SLAT, NX/DEP and CMPXCHG16b support.

How many virtual machines can I run on Standard?

Two, on a fully licensed server. If you need more, you add another complete set of core licences for every additional two virtual machines. Once you are past roughly a dozen, Datacenter usually works out cheaper.

Can I install it in a virtual machine or on a VPS?

Yes. Windows Server 2025 installs and activates in Hyper-V, VMware, Proxmox and most VPS environments. Licensing is still based on the physical cores of the host machine, which is worth checking with your hosting provider.

Can I try it before buying?

Yes. Microsoft offers a free 180-day evaluation of Windows Server 2025 from its Evaluation Center. Install that, make sure your hardware and applications behave, and enter a licence key when you are satisfied.

Do I need to reinstall to upgrade from Server 2019 or 2022?

Not necessarily. In-place upgrades to Windows Server 2025 are supported from Server 2012 R2 and later, though Microsoft recommends no more than two versions in one jump. A clean installation remains the safer option for a domain controller. Back up first either way.

Is this a subscription?

No. This is a one-time purchase with no renewal and no recurring fee.

What if the key will not activate?

Get in touch and we will sort it out. Send us the exact error code from slmgr /dlv or the Activation screen — it usually tells us immediately what went wrong. Our refund policy covers unused keys for 30 days. Contact support.
